Since you are going through the effort and expense of painting you might as well pick the latest colors. Toward the end of each year, the major paint manufacturers announce their new color palettes for the upcoming year. They base their pallets on fashion trends in interior designs as well as clothing trends.  Definitely a cool way to picking colors.

Don’t shy away from bold dark colors

So many homeowners shy away from using darker and bolder colors thinking that they might darken the room. But that is not so. Now, dark blue is the new white. When selecting colors to paint always with go with your instinct and pick the colors you love and harmonize with your furnishings. If you like dark and bold colors don’t be afraid, just do it.

Highlight architectural features you may have.

Another way to pick your colors is by accentuating the architectural features you may have. Nooks and crannies are great and can be made a “feature” in your room. Also, painting the top and bottom and the top in different colors is a great way to make a space pop. There’s no right or wrong which color goes where. Some like the darker paint on top and some like it below the chair rail. Personally, I prefer to have a darker paint color on the bottom and a lighter on top. Adding a chair rail in a room gives you the perfect opportunity to do something a little different.

There is no rule that says that you have to have your ceilings painted white. Paint your ceilings with a color that complements the walls, it’ll help to bring the space together. If you are more daring, try painting your ceiling in black. The result can be stunning.

Change the color of your trims

We are used to seeing trims painted in white but finally, the trend has shifted.  Now we see a lot more trims painted in off-white. We like to recommend a neutral off-white paint and use it throughout the entire house.

Make use of sample paints and online tools offered by some paint stores

If you’ve narrowed your paint colors down to a few but you just can’t be sure, there’s hope. Sherwin Williams sells quart-sized samples that cost around $5.00. Buy a couple and a mini roller and start putting the colors on the walls. Just make sure you apply a sample in a couple of different areas in the same room, lighting differences may change how the colors look
